life peer

life peer
A member of the House of Lords appointed by the Prime Minister of the day for their lifetime only. Today, life peers overwhelmingly form the largest segment of the membership of the House of Lords under Phase One of its reform. Announcements of new creations appear in the New Year Honours List, the Monarch’s Birthday Honours List, the Dissolution Honours List and the Resignation Honours List of the outgoing Prime Minister.
Life peers derive from a range of backgrounds. Some are appointed to certain important public functionaries upon retirement – for example, Archbishops of Canterbury and Speakers of the House of Commons.
